  • Happiness and Headstands

Spring Break 2008 was the best trip ever thanks to good planning, great locations, and fun travel buddies.

    Friday March, 14: Nice, France

I spent the beginning of spring break in France with Christy.  We tried to take a train to Nice, but the train workers in France were on strike so it took a little work to actually make it into the city.  After checking into our hostel, we spent the afternoon napping on the beach before going out to dinner and meeting many French and other international people.

Saturday, March 15: Nice, France/ Monte Carlo, Monaco

We began the day by exploring the old town of the city for about four hours and then visiting the flower market.

For lunch we ate crepes ON the beach (this was our table: )IMG_2257

and then we took a bus to Monaco to see the world-famous aquarium and visit the Monte Carlo casino.

Sunday, March 16: Nice, France/ Avignon, France

On Sunday morning, we went to the Modern and Contemporary Art Museum in Nice before taking the 3 hour train to Avignon. We both loved the museum and it was a great choice.

We spent the evening exploring Avignon and walking across the river, and we had to try REAL French onion soup.

Monday, March 17: Avignon, France/ Marseille, France

After visiting the Palace of the Popes in Avignon with a long audio tour, we headed to Marseille.

We took a bus tour of the city, during which we saw the Chateau d'If from the Count of Monte Christo, the harbor area, and all of the famous city monuments (including a horrible copy of Michelangelo's David in a roundabout).  The best part of Marseille was the Tunisian food we ate for dinner-- cous cous, veggie soup, and roast chicken.

Tuesday, March 18: Faro, Portugal/ Lagos, Portugal/ Sagres, Portugal

Tuesday was a LONG travel day.. we arrived at the Marseille airport at 4 am and didn't arrive at surf camp until 11pm. The best part of the day was reuniting with Hannah and Sarah, who had spent the first part of vacation in Ireland.

Wednesday, March 19- Saturday, March 22: Sagres, Portugal & Praia do Amado

Surf Camp was amazing!  We found out about the Algarve Surf Camp (www.algarvesurfcamp.com) in the book we got Sarah for her birthday called Make the Most of Your Time on Earth which features 1000 things all over the world to do.  We stayed at the surf camp house with the instructors, where they hosted BBQs and showed slideshows of pictures they took of us during the day.  Every day we woke up to eat breakfast and make lunch before getting in jeeps for the 30 minute trip on dirt roads to get to the isolated beach Praia do Amado.

We had a half hour of warmups, and then two hours of lessons with our instructor Sergio and his boxer Lucy.

After the morning lesson, a yoga instructor arrived and we had a fun session of yoga right on the beach.  The best part was learning how to stand on our heads!! Hannah and I are experts.

There was another two hour lesson after lunch, and by the end of the week we could all stand up on our boards.  Surf camp was a success!

    Sunday, March 23: Lisbon, Portugal

Unfortunately we had to leave Portugal and return to Florence.  Getting home was quite an adventure.  We had to take a long train to Lisbon, and spend the night before catching another train the next morning at 6am to Porto, in Northern Portugal. Luckily we had enough time to try the fried bananas.

Monday, March 24: Porto, Portugal & home to Florence

We made both our flight to Pisa and our connecting bus back to Florence, and ended our trip with Chinese food at a restaurant near school before heading home to 11 days of sandy laundry.  All of the travel was definitely worth seeing the French Riviera and especially getting the chance to see Portugal!

  • The Hills are Alive with the Sound of Music

When we learned that we were only a night train's ride away from the locations featured in The Sound of Music, Katie, Kristine, Christy, and I knew we couldn't miss seeing Salzburg, Austria.  We visited Salzburg from March 6-9 and had a wonderful time on various tours, playing in the snow, and getting to know the city.

On our first day, we spent the morning watching The Sound of Music in our hostel before leaving on the "Official Sound of Music Tour Endorsed By Maria Von Trapp" which was just as cheesy as it sounds.  We had a great time visiting locations from the movie and singing all of the movie songs on the bus.  The best part was the drive to the village on Mondsee, in the lakes region of Austria.  The scenery was beautiful and the views fantastic.

Saturday was my birthday and we took a tour into Germany and the Bavarian mountains to see Hitler's Eagle's Nest and visit some little villages and the Salt Mines.  The salt mine experience was like going to Disneyland... there was a light show, train rides, slides, and a boat ride across a salt lake inside a mountain.  It was snowing, so I spent alot of time on the novel activities of making snowmen and snow angels.

Of course, we had to try the famous apple strudel!

That night we visited the fortress on the plateau above Salzburg and took a tour of the palace in it.  We saw a flyer for a Mozart concert, and were lucky enough to get tickets for a four-course dinner in a restaurant on top of the fortress followed by a great Mozart concert by a string quartet.

On Sunday we went to Mozart's birthplace and the Mozart museum before the cultural event of the weekend: eating Salzburger Knokerl, the famous dessert that is supposed to represent the mountains of Austria.  A picture is the only way to describe it:

We headed back to Florence Sunday night, and arrived a little late on Monday morning after experiencing our first ever train fire. That experience was a little stressful, but nothing could have ruined such a great weekend!

  • Bavaria, Germany: The Reason People Travel in the Summer

We didn't want to waste any travel time, so three days after we returned from Barcelona, Hannah, Christy, Sarah and I went to Munich for the weekend.  This was our first exposure to the "night train experience" which involves stuffing yourself into a compartment the size of a broomcloset with 5 strangers and sleeping on a "bed" roughly the size of a boogey board.  Our train left at 9pm on Thursday night, and we woke up the next morning at 8am already at the central Munich station.  After a quick stop at the Starbucks conveniently located next the the tracks, we dropped our backpacks at our hostel and left to explore the city.

I spent the morning wandering around "old town" Munich which is identically to the "It's a Small World" ride at Disneyland.  I visited the Glockenspiel, Germany's biggest cuckoo clock, before joining the group for our afternoon bike tour of the city.

    The Glockenspiel

Going on a "Mike's Bike Tour" was one of the highlights of our trip.  We saw most of the city's famous attractions on a four hour ride narrated by a friendly English-speaking (Hawaiin actually) tour guide.  We rode through the English Gardens, Munich's park which is even bigger than Central Park in New York City.  We stopped for lunch in the park at the world's 2nd largest beer garden, the Chinese Tower Beer Garden.  When the tour finished around 5pm, we returned to the hostel for a quick nap before dinner.  Going out to dinner in Munich was a true adventure because we had no idea what we were ordering or even how to order in the first place.  We all ate with our eyes closed and hoped for the best.

    Munich Bike Tour

On Saturday morning we took a 3 1/2 hour train ride to Schwangau, a small town on the base of the alps, to see Schloss Neuschwanstein. The castle was built by King Ludwig II in the late 1800's and was the inspiration for the Disney logo.  To reach the castle, we had to walk about 40 minutes straight uphill through the snow.  We took a short tour, which was nice, but what really made the trip worth it was the view from the Marienbrucke bridge.

We arrived back in Munich at about 9pm, just in time to head out to dinner at the world-famous Hofbrauhaus.  On Sunday we visited Dachau, about 20 minutes from Munich, to see the concentration camp memorial site.  We spent over 5 hours in the museum, on the grounds, and visiting the monuments.  Of course this was not an enjoyable experience, but we all felt that Dachau was an important place to visit.  One night train later, we arrived back in Florence at 3am.  Just in time for my Monday morning 9am economics class.

  • Barcelona

We have been in Florence for over a month, and my roommates and I are ready to start exploring Europe.  We started by flying to Barcelona, Spain last weekend (Feb. 1-3) to see the interesting architecture and nice beaches.  Barcelona turned out to be my favorite city in Europe so far, and we had a fantastic weekend.

Our trip began on Friday morning with a train trip to Pisa to catch a Ryanair flight to Girona, about 1.5 hours from Barcelona.  We arrived in Barcelona at about 5 pm on Friday and were walking through the city when we chanced upon a miracle: our first Starbucks since leaving home.  After taking lots of pictures and joyfully ordering Frapuccinos, we checked into our hostel, which was clean and offered free WiFi and breakfast.  The hostel also offered several different tours of the city, and we decided to take a Flamenco & Tapas tour that evening which took us out for traditional Spanish food and culture.

    Our Room

We woke up early on Saturday and started off by going to la Sagrada Familia, Gaudi's masterpiece.  The cathedral has been under construction for over 100 years, and is still largely unfinished.  Hannah, Sarah, Christy, and I decided to take the audio tour, which was a wonderful choice.  We learned about the building itself and saw the original workshops and models in the underground museum.

After stopping for a quick lunch, we headed off to the Park Guell, a huge open space that offers great views of the city, more Gaudi architecture, and Gaudi's home which is now a museum.  We looked around for a few hours, saw the museum, and sat down for some hot chocolate.

On Sunday we were happy to find that entrance to the Picasso museum was free for the day.  We spent several hours in the museum, which contained works by Picasso as a child, and tracked his artistic development over time with hundreds of works from the early 1900's until his death.

After lunch at a noddle bar (also our first Asian food since arriving in Europe) we finished off the day by visiting a few other architectural sights, in particular la Casa Batllo.

We made our way back to the airport and arrived in Florence about 3 am, just in time to prepare for out 9 am classes.  All together, Barcelona is a fantastic city and definitely worth the trip.  Next up: leaving today for 3 days in Munich, Germany!
